Shameless Promotion: Truths Revealed

She--Suzanne Santillan--the sweet, dulcet-toned author of Grandma's Pear Tree-- twisted my arm, held my fingers to the fire, threatened and cajoled and finally I cracked. . .

Truth time: I did not create any of the clever, brilliant, fun, educational  Teaching Guides, Activities, Crafts, Puzzles, Story Hours Kits you'll find if you click on the Activities Tab.

Behind the curtain, I work with a dynamic talented team who deserve to be acknowledged and shared and receive heaps of thanks and praise for all their efforts.

So at Suzanne's urging, I spilled the  4-1-1 on the how, who, and where's of my promotional material on Writing on the Sidewalk.

#14 Confessions from a Vampire Victim's Mom

I think Zachary was chocolate-flavored when he was little. He was bitten soooooo many times I started thinking about buying muzzles for other kids.
— author Sarah Tomp about her son...too many Vampire Babies' victim

Sarah Wones Tomp wrote one of my favorite picture books: RED, WHITE & BLUE GOODBYE and the forthcoming "Moonshine" Young Adult novel MY BEST EVERYTHING, (Little, Brown 2015.  Her musings can be found at  "Writing on the Sidewalk". And while I'm sure she'd laugh at the sight of vampire fangs, I'm pretty sure she doesn't bite!

Everyone with a loved one in the military needs this picture book! You'll have to get it used because it's out of print.. but do... you'll be glad!

Lucky #13 Vampire Baby Play List

After 4 years of piano lessons, my teacher finally told me one day "If you aren't willing to try playing chord progressions, maybe you'd better quit." (And yes, I did want to bite her for that...) So I can't play a few bars. But my head is stuffed with music. Say pretty much anything and a song pops into my head.

So, of course Vampire Baby has a play list.

Music soothes the savage beast!

#2 Her Favorite Food are Red, Blood-red . . .

Confessions of a Not-So Baby Vampire #2

Having lived all my 8 years near the strawberry fields of California--"The Fruit Bowl"  "Salad Bowl" or "Paradise" Nanny called it, depending on the season--moving to Pennsylvania, arriving Christmas Eve, in a blizzard, was . . .  an adjustment. My mom says my brother and I "cried because we couldn't go outside." (I think she's being a bit dramatic...) The sentiment was true enough. I especially missed the abondanza of fruit: red delicious (although mealy) apples, plump red plums, juicy red raspberries, and most of all, heaping crates of field-sweet strawberries so ripe the juices ran blood-red down my arm when I bit one.

In our Easter outfits, check out those gloves and my groovy handbag!

In our Easter outfits, check out those gloves and my groovy handbag!

So that first Easter in Pennsylvania, when mom surprised us with a fresh strawberry pie, well, who could blame me?

After double-checking no one was near, I plucked a big red strawberry dripping with glaze from the back of the pie and ate it.

Blood-red desire for more drove me to do something I knew I shouldn't.

I sneaked back into the fridge, plucked another strawberry out of the pie. Held it poised over my mouth and bit off the bottom. Then I tucked it back into the pie, stem side up. The glaze settled in nicely around it. None would have been the wiser if I'd stopped at one. But I didn't. Couldn't. Again and again I sneaked back for more.

Who will notice a missing bite or two. . . Pass the whipped cream, quick!

Who will notice a missing bite or two. . . Pass the whipped cream, quick!

By the time it was served, the pie had shrunk in size by half.  I held my breath and hoped no one would notice. And they didn't seem to,  not until my mom served up the first slice and several bottomless strawberries tumbled out.

Confession of a Baby Vampire #1

I didn't have Vampire fangs. But I was a biter. I bit my big brother, Joe. I bit my mother. And one day, when my grandfather, Poppy, came to pick me up at school, he found my teacher in tears. Why? Because I bit and kicked her... Then I climbed to the top of the monkey bars I wouldn't come down . . .

Whoops! I didn't mean to hurt her....honest!

VAMPIRE BABY is here!

Vampire Baby cover-final
Vampire Baby cover-final

Finally...5 years and 12 revisions and I-don't-even-want-to-try-to-count how many Vampire movies, books, blogs after that fabulous title popped into my head Vampire Baby has arrived! Thanks to all of you who laughed when I said the title.) Paul Meisel's art makes it! Available from Candlewick Press and booksellers everywhere!

Here's the blurb:

It happens overnight: "little sister Tootie goes from cuddly, ga-ga-goo-goo, I-want-my-ba-ba baby to...vampire baby." Now she’s sinking her pointy fangs into everything -- furniture, toys, and especially her big brother ("Youch, Tootie! No bite!"). Mom insists that it’s just a phase, but Tootie’s brother knows better. Just look at her hairline! Or the fact that all her favorite foods are bloodred! With perfect comic timing, Kelly Bennett and Paul Meisel give a fresh slant to the new-baby story, proving that even monstrous little arrivals have a funny way of staking their siblings’ affections.

When Tootie gets her first teeth, it’s clear to her big brother that she’s no ordinary baby. But how to convince Mom and Dad?

On Being the Filling and Refilling that Well!

When I used to grouse about how life interfered with my writing schedule,  my friend, Richard Harnett,  always brushed it away saying "You're refilling your writer's well, Kel." Every moment of living adds another drop to your writer's well

It always made me feel good to hear that. To think those times I was so busy with living I couldn't write would one day, serve my writing.

My well is filling, brimming, overflowing . . .  It's been keeping me from posting here--sorry for that. But this is life: rich, messy, exciting, unpredictable, scary--definitely a piled high, deli sandwich.

To paraphrase  Auntie Mame, "If life is a banquet I'm stuffing myself." (Music and lyrics by Jerry Herman.)

Mom's  the bottom layer.  Hers is a stodgy, crusty, nutty and grainy end of the loaf slice, anchoring our open-faced sandwich.

Mom, Mary Ellen, Grandma at M&M's wedding last September.

Mom has been in and out of rehab and hospital the past few years. Heavy as it may be, it's a spicy, interesting layer as it has brought me closer to my brother Joe and his family as we band together to support mom.

Grace Goofing

Devin Rocking Out

Curtis and my move from Indonesia to Trinidad and New York last year, brought with it a whole new bag of flavors we're sampling. It's predictable and surprising as dried seaweed sprinkes.

Son Max's wedding to Michelle in Long Island last summer, added a flavorful, thick ham and sweet, spicy saucy layer.

M&M Riding into the Sunset

Daughter, Lexi's wedding to Ryan, scheduled for this November in Turks and Caicos, is proving pesto--fresh & complex with zing!

Cake Tasting . . . before

and after--I helped!

My new, long awaited picture book, Vampire Baby--the gumbo, sambal, curry layer adds fuel.

Crawling your way July 9th!

And soon to come--and feeling real courtesy of these 3D photos--our newest layer: a grandbaby! Max and Michelle's baby--a festive topper--arrives this August!

I wonder, could those toes . . .

Sneak Preview

Yep, that well is brimming! And that's some kinda ink! In the meantime, our Dagwood-style sandwich is growing taller and more interesting. A banquet indeed!

When life gets in the way of your creating, loosen your belt buckle so you, too, can enjoy the banquet. And think ink! INK!

Please stay tuned for more!

Selamat makan! Happy filling and refilling!
